Nonsuch Mansion & Carew Manor School: Two impressive ‘Estates of Grandeur’ in Sutton
The Grade II listed Nonsuch Mansion stands within the 700 acres of the picturesque Nonsuch Park. With its impressive façade and recently renovated interior this mansion has a wondrous array of interiors from the stately to the institutional to the rustic. Complimenting the main house are the lovely formal gardens, isolated pathways and expansive parkland. Situated across the borough is the exquisite Carew Manor School. Currently a working school but self proclaimed as ‘film friendly’ this site has many original features and spaces including the stunning Great Hall, a medieval period church and classic Tudor exteriors throughout - all set within sumptuous grounds.

Built in the Tudor-Gothic style this mansion house reveals a treasure trove of aesthetic treats. The ground floor consists of a series of interconnected ornate drawing rooms all possessing original period features with a natural stately grandeur - in a recently renovated condition. In contrast to this however, is the first floor of institutional rooms and corridors, a basement of slightly shabbier, rustic, vaulted arches and stone corridors, and from its turreted rooftops there are stunning panoramic views over Nonsuch Park (which also happens to be one of Henry VIII’s most monumental achievements).

Built around a central quadrant, the main building of Carew Manor School is an imposing 16th Century edifice housing an exquisite ‘Great Hall’ with ornate wood panelling and a late-medieval hammer-beamed roof that dates back to around 1500 and can lay claim to be Suttons’ only Grade I listed property. This is a striking location that is reminiscent of some iconic buildings such as - Oxford University Colleges, the halls of the Royal palaces at Westminster, Eltham Palace and Hampton Court – this is a perfect ‘doubles’ location. The remainder of the Carew Manor School consists of a gym, a commercial kitchen, classrooms, an abundance of corridors all laid above a labyrinthine network of basement tunnels and rooms, creating an unnerving institutional feel.

Other highlights of this glorious location include a medieval church, a prominent Orangery Wall and stunning majestic Tudor facades of the remaining school buildings. This site also has its own expansive lawns and spectacular grounds. With spacious onsite parking, all sized productions can base themselves at Carew Manor School, which despite being operational, is available at weekends and during school holidays.
